Project Details

Fennec is the mobile version of Firefox with a new UI and built on top of Xulrunner. We test it in many of the same ways, but there are a lot of new things to look out for across a variety of platforms such as Windows Mobile Standard/Professional, Linux Maemo and all standard Desktop OS's (Win XP/Vista/7, OSX and Linux) . To learn more about us, visit our home page at https://wiki.mozilla.org/QA/Fennec !

We're always looking for more help (especially in the ways described below), so if you're interested please contact jmaher or aakashd. If you want to talk to the Mozilla Mobile Community, please contact us in our IRC Channel. To get started now, look at how you can help below!

How you can help...

Download a nightly build for the desktop and/or mobile device

  • for Windows Mobile Devices: Download a .cab file
  • for Linux-Maemo Devices: Download xulrunner.deb and fennec.deb
  • for Desktop Builds: download .zip/.tar.gz and unzip

From there, we have many ways to contribute:

Beta1 is released

With much work from the dev and test teams, we have finally released Beta1:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/fennec/1.0b1/releasenotes/

Give it a try!  If you don't have a device there are desktop builds to install.  There are new things such as the bookmark manager, tracemonkey (really fast jit for javascript), much improved panning, flash plugin support (you can finally watch youtube videos) and most of all a new startup screen!

Check it out and let us know what you think.  Next stop is a real alpha release for Windows Mobile.

Beta1 binaries available

Fennec Beta1 is just about to be released and we have release candidate binaries available for testing.  This is a great way to give feedback and help develop the product without ramping up on the code base and reading a lot of blogs and design documents.  Also if you just want to check out the new interface and get an idea for what we are working on this is the way to go.

For final release versions of fennec, you can find them here:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/

Automated builds for the Nokia Maemo:
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/tinderbox-builds/mobile-browser-linux-...

Mark Finkle has created some desktop versions of fennec and posted them on his website:
http://people.mozilla.com/~mfinkle/fennec/

Feel free to download the version you want (most people download a desktop build and play with it) and get started with Fennec.  If you would like to contribute as a developer we will be posting some projects to work on here:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Community:SummerOfCode09:Brainstorming#Fennec

If you just want to test it out and make sure it works with your web applications or the browsing that you need, we need help doing that as well!

Happy browsing and thanks for taking a look at Fennec.

rc2 is available

We have found and fixed a lot of bugs and we are now at rc2!  This is what we really want to ship, but need to get some mileage behind it.

Right now we only have the maemo bits available:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/b1rc2/

I will update this post when there are desktop bits available.

Thanks for testing!

Voyager?

Any chance this'll make it's way to verizon?  Like the LG voyager?

probably not the voyager, but other vz phones can run it

We are working on Windows Mobile support and some of the HTC phones will be supported.  Similar to the iphone, there would be issues getting our code to work on the lg/verizon os that is used probably both from a technical and a legal standpoint.

Thanks for the comment and suggestion.  I have a HTC Touch Pro and it is a really slick phone.  sort of pricey though.

This is a great idea, you

This is a great idea, you should also make a version for the Iphone/Ipod Touch too. This would be cool.

there is a lot of demand for it

We have had a lot of requests for delivering mobile firefox to the iphone.  That would make a lot of sense.  Right now we are just targeting Nokia Maemo, Windows Mobile and Symbian as those are open platforms with good sdk's, support and no licensing issues.

Maybe in the future when we have a stable release for our 3 platforms and the iphone sdk adjusts their licensing and 3rd party application requirements we can start development on the platform.

Nokia Maemo - 5 ways you can help

With a Beta release for the Maemo platform, Fennec is becoming more stable and ready to be a real browser!  This is a great opportunity to help out with the Fennec project just by using the browser.

1) Download and install a nightly build (pick the latest date):
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/tinderbox-builds/mobile-browser-linux-...
2) Verify you can browse and interact with your favorite websites!  If something doesn't work, file a bug in http://bugzilla.mozilla.org, or post a comment in the QMO forums.
3) Run through the Litmus (http://litmus.mozilla.org) testcases for Fennec.  Fennec is changing every week so this makes sure Fennec is stable and our testcases are up to date.  If a testcase doesn't work, mark it in Litmus and we will investigate it
4) Suggest test cases that are unique to Fennec or the Maemo platform in the Forums.  There are a lot of unique features on the Maemo device that we need to work with and getting feedback from people who use the device daily and how it should work while on the run
5) Blog about your experience with Fennec to spread the word

Windows Mobile - 5 things you can do to help

Love the idea of running firefox on your smartphone?  Here are 5 things you can do to help us out:
1) install the milestone build and browse your favorite sites and post on here how your experience goes:
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mobile/fennec-0.11.en-US.wince-arm.cab
2) reply to this thread with test cases that interact with features of your phone.  These are things like integration with camera, audio, phone, gps or anything else.  We need test cases that are specific for the phone which are not seen in a normal Firefox web browser
3) File bugs in bugzilla for issues you find with the installation of Fennec on your device
4) Run through a smoketest test pass in litmus (http://litmus.mozilla.org)
5) Sign up for future testing when new builds come out by replying to this thread or sending me a message.

It doesn't take much to help out and make a big contribution, so jump in and help out!

Windows Mobile - Milestone release is here

The Mobile team has created a milestone release for everybody to see Fennec on their windows mobile devices.  This is a very early release (pre-alpha) which is mainly for people to see it first hand:
http://blog.mozilla.com/blassey/2009/02/10/fennec-milestone-release-for-...

If you have a HTC Touch Pro, I would recommend giving this a try to see the great work that has been done so far.

Windows Mobile - Alpha1

The Fenenc project is moving fast!  We are hoping next week to get an early release alpha1 of the Mindows Mobile Fennec released.  Initially this has been developed and tested on  the HTC Touch Pro.  This alpha release will be fully functional (for the most part) and built with no special patches.

If you have been waiting for the time to jump in, this is it.  We need test cases in Litmus as well as people to just install the bits.  We will need to iron out the installation and distribution process going forward.

I will post a comment next week when we get official builds to try out.

Expansion on Netbook Idea

I have openned up a forum topic to further gather ideas and research as well as to discuss the pros and cons of the main idea. There is also currently(at the time of this posting) links to a proposed UI for Fennec that would make it more netbook friendly.

Go have a look!

Updated Project Details - Beta1 in February

We are getting ready for Beta1 to release at the end of February.  There is a lot to do but many great things coming out of this.  This Beta is for Maemo (Nokia internet tablets) only.  Windows Mobile and Symbian are in the pipeline, just not ready for Beta.

The dev team is fixing a lot of bugs and adding features to make this a browser more like Firefox!  In QA, we are flushing out our test plans (we need help here!), building up our test cases in Litmus, and working on getting the Firefox unit tests integrated into the tinderbox buildbot system.  We are also getting ramped up for Windows Mobile testing which adds a whole new pile of challenges to our team.

I have updated the Project here in QMO to outline ways to help, more details about Fennec and the upcoming Beta release next month.

Look for posts in the Forums and Events in the calendar.
