Mozilla QA is excited to announce that we will be holding our first ever week-long bugday event. The goal of this event will be to resolve all the outstanding in-litmus? bugs for Firefox 4.
What are in-litmus bugs?
We have thousands of bugs filed in our system. Sometimes those bugs expose a certain test case or scenario that we had not thought of testing before. Sometimes those bugs are new features which need new test cases. When a developer marks a bug with the in-litmus flag, it signals to us that this bug may need a testcase. It is our job to evaluate whether that is necessary and to create the testcase if needed.
What will be happening, exactly?
As mentioned earlier, this is the first time we’ve tried a week long event. Each day we have a different set of activities happening. Here is a list of what we will be doing:
Monday, we will be offering workshops on using Litmus, Bugzilla, and writing good testcases
Tuesday, we will be focusing on Tabbed Browsing testcases
Wednesday, we will be focusing on Session Store testcases
Thursday, we will be focusing on Panorama (aka Tab Candy) test cases
Friday, we will be seeking to resolve all remaining in-litmus? bugs across all features in Firefox.
We will also be having a testday for Direct2D and Panorama functionality in Firefox on Friday
How can I help?
This all depends on your level of comfort. We want you to help us in the best way you can. If you have little or no experience with Litmus, Bugzilla, or writing testcases, you should come out on Monday and learn what it’s all about. If you have some experience and want to hone your skills, and you want to focus on Tabbed Browsing, Session Store, or Panorama, you should join us on Tuesday to Thursday. If you are pretty good at writing testcases and want to work at your own pace, you should help us on Friday with the in-litmus? bugs.
If bug work and writing testcases is not your thing and you like to test new features, we have just the thing for you. On Friday, we’ll be running a testday in #testday for Direct2D and Panorama in Firefox 4. If you want to help test two of the hottest new features in Firefox, you should come out Friday and help us test.
What’s in it for me?
First, your efforts will go to make Firefox a better product. Without testcases for these bugs, it’s likely they could occur again. You are helping millions of people who use Firefox everyday.
Of course, we’ve also built in a new incentive structure to this week-long event. Depending on how much you are able to contribute, you could win various prizes. Some of the prizes include:
an “I Support The Open Web” wrist band
a Mozilla t-shirt, of your choosing
a $25 credit for the Mozilla Store
Where do I begin?
Great, you’ve decided you want to help out, but you want to learn more first.
The first thing you should do is familiarize yourself with the test plan — this tells you everything you need to know about what is happening this week.
The second thing you should do is read over the testcase writing primer — this will help you with writing a good testcase.
The third thing you should do, if you plan on attending, is fill out our survey — this will help us learn more about who you are so we can make bugdays more interesting to you.
That should put you in good standing to help us throughout the week. If you still feel unprepared or inexperienced, come out Monday and learn what it’s all about. Don’t worry if you miss Monday’s workshops either; we’ll have people on-hand to assist during the entire week.
The event runs from Monday to Friday, 11am to 6pm PDT (1800 – 0100Z). So if you want to help out or learn something new, join us! You’ll find us on irc.mozilla.org in the #bugday channel.
