Firefox 3.1 beta 3

The much awaited launch of Fx3.1 Beta 3 is now in the hands of QA for testing.   We are working hard to target ship by 3/12 now, pending any blockers found.   BetaTesters, we'd love your extra help on these beta 3 candidates!    Please download a beta 3 candidate and give it a testrun.   All bugs found should be investigated for dupes first, and then filed under bugzilla.   Note that these are not official, until QA has signed off on them, and the announcement is made on Mozilla Developer News.

How do I get ready?

Download the Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 Candidate and test the hell out of it!

This is what we're doing...

See summary for details, but we're looking for more beta 3 candidate testers!

Nice! But most of the extensions I used are not supported. Eg.Batch download, Password exporter...  Problem with Google toolbar 5 beta, posted that on Hendrix.

Nightly Tester Tools

You can try the Nightly Tester Tools add on. It overrides all incompatibilities!

Re: Extensions

Yeah, because this is a preview beta, many extensions do not work, though that is not the fault of mozilla. Because extensions, like google toolbar, are developer by 3rd party companies and individuals, Mozilla can not make them compatible. They will have to do so themselves.

Yes, I guessed so. Anyway I hope Google update their toolbar, i miss it! Yes, it seems that the developers of extensions are a little bit sluggish in updating their components.

For those of you wondering...

They posted on Slashdot that the beta won't be up until 2 PM PDT:

http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/03/12/1435205&from=rss

After that, you can get the beta at:

http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-beta.html

I don't know if this code is different than the beta 3 candidate that I downloaded last week.

Hopefully this will point people in the right direction, after they landed here after a Google search.

Can someone please add a searchable date to the 'show all history'. This is a weakness and an irritation which can be solved by a few lines of code.
IE collates history by days of the week, then last week, then previous weeks which is useful for searching for that elusive site we bought a widget from and want the URL to repeat the order, phone them etc etc.

QAC needs version bump

Thanks for the report, QAC will be updated on AMO shortly.   You can always update your current version to support the latest nightly or beta candidate by changing your <maxVersion> in the install.rdf file of your profile directory.

Beta 3 is around the corner

Read the following for the latest newsgroup post by beltzner on beta 3.   Expect a week of testing before it goes live once builds are handed to qa.
The tracking page for releases is always at: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Releases.
Ship date will be updated on QMO once dates are set.

New schedule for Firefox 3.1 beta 3 test week:

Looks like beta 3 could be due out in the middle or late March.
Oh well. FF 3.0.7 seems to be more ready than FF 3.1b3.

Yes, Beta 3 delayed, no ETA yet

Folks, we appreciate your concern that Fx3.1 beta 3 is delayed.   Ensure that none of the developers is *wanting* this as much as you are, but its also more important to ship a quality product than one with enough known bugs that mozilla isn't proud of.
FWIW, there are still 8 blocking P1 bugs in platform for beta 3 that need to be fixed before even proceeding to builds.   Once builds are made, QA will need another 5 working days to validate the builds before we go live.   Thanks for being patient, and feel free to continue to test on the branch 1.9.1 nightlies.
We will update the ship date here as soon as we know more.

RE: Yes, Beta 3 delayed, no ETA yet

Thanks for telling me why Mozilla Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 has been delayed again. I understand that it is better to release a beta with no known bugs than release a beta with bugs and have people report bugs that are already known to the development team. I've been using Mozilla Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 for a while now and it's great. I can't wait for the new beta when it comes out.

I've got my fingers crossed

Well, I've been using 3.1b2 since it came out and I've finally gotten completely fed up with it.  I think it's by far the worse build for a Firefox beta ever and the performance is agonizingly slow.  Well, 'lo and behold, I logged in to start downloading nightlies and discovered that b3 was supposed to have come out 25 minutes ago.. except.. it didn't.  I'll cross my fingers, hope it gets released today, and it kicks ass.

More Delays

Mozilla delays Firefox 3.1 again, schedules another beta
By Jose Vilches, TechSpot.com Published: February 26, 2009, 4:45 PM EST
Don’t count on seeing the final Firefox 3.1 release any time in the immediate future. Following a succession of delays since October, Mozilla has announced that a first quarter release of the product is unlikely and that it will add another beta to the development cycle due to problems with the new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine. As it stands now Firefox 3.1 beta 3 will be released next week, come hell or high water, with a fourth beta expected to arrive in around seven weeks. The company is facing increased pressure from rival browser makers, which have recently made moves of their own. Microsoft, for instance, may wrap up Internet Explorer 8 as early as next month while just a couple of days ago Apple launched a public beta of Safari 4. Both browsers promise to give Firefox a run for its money with faster JavaScript engines and new features. Meanwhile, Opera too is working on a JavaScript engine overhaul while Chrome has rapidly moved out of beta and is looking to gain more traction around May by introducing Firefox-like extensions support.

Even Safari has released a new beta candidate. Well, whaddya know! ...and it even scores a 100/100 on ACID 3... guys, its really lookslike (for the first time) FF is a (little) behind in the race  :-(

February 21, 2009

WOW

After all the comments im hearing, you guys were supposed to release it along time ago. Well yes i agree with okeloco
it should have bugs. But what if it crashes your computer, or dletes all your files (even worse) so ... it depends on why your not releasing it. Well I think it will be out March 2nd.

Ok, beta was delayed.

Ah, the beta was delayed. I wondered why it was being released in March when I was sure it was going to be released in February.
I hope it still counts to participate as long as I download & install Mozilla Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 on the same day it is released (I'm unable to download & install it at the time it is released.)

Again? =\

Delayed AGAIN!? I agree with everyone here: it's a beta not a RC or the final version. Release it already! Other browsers are catching in on us!

pozzo

February 19, 2009

Yes, but most of the major

Yes, but most of the major bugs have been fixed. And the constant stretching of the release date isn't helping the fact that ff 3.0.6 has so many bugs. Bet the beta 3 will be better than that!

chayashida

February 18, 2009

It's okay to delay

I think it's okay to delay the beta. It only makes sense to have a lot of users test a build after the major bugs have been fixed. After the big ones are fixed, then they can release the next beta and we can find new ones for them to fix. :)
If you want to be bleeding edge, you can always try out the nightlies. :)

delayed? Again???!!

What is with you people and beta 3? I mean really, this looks very bad for us FF users. IE even got out a RC! But you've been delaying beta 3 for what? like months. Those people at IE are laughing at us. March 2nd??? I hope there'll be no more delay. This is meant to be a BETA, not RC.

When March 2nd comes around , will there be another delay? I hope that you realize that the Opera and IE people are laughing at Mozilla and making jokes.

This is A JOKE

I just can't believe you delayed Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 AGAIN.
Seriously guys, why are you so afraid of releasing a BETA? Beta products are supposed to have bugs, people expect Betas not to be perfect. There's no need to do exhaustive testing!
Why are you even posting a date now?

Although it isn't that important, I would like Firefox 3.1 to have the Vista-like close, minimize and maximize buttons instead of the standard XP ones.  Also, it should use the Blue Strata theme instead of the Green Strata theme.

Theme

You can always use the Vista on XP theme. I don't think we would move the vista theme to XP, as 3 is trying to provide system native themes. It is at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6839, although you need 3.1.

One of the features that I would like to see is an option to see all tabs from all open windows.  And an option to make all open windows into a new window.
